Emergence of Shape Semantics of Architectural Shapes
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper presents a representation of shapes and shape semantics and processes for the emergence of shape semantics. Constraints on the behaviours of shapes are used to define shape semantics, in particular visual symmetry and visual rhythm A process model of emergence of shape semantics which relies on this representation is developed. Discovery of symmetry in architectural plans is demonstrated.

Towards Active Support Systems for Architectural Designing
This paper proposes the application of a situated learning approach in designing integrated with a conventional CAD system. The approach is implemented in SLiDe (Situated Learning in Designing) and integrated as SLiDe-CAAD, to provide interactive support in designing exemplified within the composition of architectural shapes. SLiDe-CAAD is proposed to assist in exploring the design space for va...
متن کاملRole of Visual Emergence in Collaborative Design
Shapes play an important role in at least three domains. Drawn shapes are used to represent ideas, concepts, and possible physical worlds. Perceived shapes are the way we begin to understand the world our visual sense brings to us (Marr, 1982). Computer generated shapes play a critical role in computer-aided design systems and in many areas of artificial intelligence generally. Drawn shapes spe...
متن کاملSupporting designers' hierarchies through parametric shape recognition
The need to implement shape grammars efficiently, rather than hardcode them, in a way that supports creativity through shape emergence is an ongoing research challenge. This paper introduces a shape grammar interpreter that supports parametric subshape recognition, and thereby shape emergence. The approach divides shapes into hierarchies of subshapes based on specified geometric relationships w...
متن کاملThe Role of Algorithmic Applications in the Development of Architectural Forms (Case Study:Nine High-Rise Buildings)
The process of developing architectural forms has greatly been changed by advances in digital technology, especially in design tools and applications. In recent years, the advent of graphical scripting languages in the design process has profoundly affected 3D modeling. Scripting languages help develop algorithms and geometrical grammar of shapes based on their constituent parameters. This stud...
متن کاملLearning about Shape Semantics: a Situated Learning Approach
Designers recognise or make sense of objects in the context "situations" of other things. Design cannot be predicted and you have to be “at a particular set of states” in order to decide what to do. The inability to determine a priori all design states implies that any design process cannot be pre-planned and design actions cannot be pre-defined. Situated learning is based on the notion that kn...
